What is root resorption?

Root resorption is a condition where the body’s own cells begin to break down part of the tooth root. In baby teeth, this is a normal process that allows teeth to fall out, but in permanent teeth it is usually related to things like inflammation, infection, trauma, orthodontic movement, or other irritation around the tooth. Because resorption can be difficult to detect early and may not cause symptoms, careful evaluation with dental imaging — sometimes including 3D imaging — helps determine whether the tooth can be monitored, repaired, or needs endodontic treatment.
